Notes: Our 2nd time at Lepakkomies, a surprisingly nice place for us part-time bands with a nice atmosphere and good sounds. We followed the promising Walkalone and the multi-talented Combover and played pretty much the usual Blanket standards. Teppo was away doing some hard time, so we filled his big-ass boots with Mr Mursu a.ka Pikkis from Clarkkent. Mursu was awesomely good and punctual as usual and knew all the songs better than we did. Big thanks to Mursu and everyone who withstood the harsh winter conditions and came out to dance the night away! See you next time if there is a next time!

Notes: We were asked to play at the 10 year anniversary party of the Stop Huumeille ry (Stop Drugs Ltd) and were happy to comply as we think all drugs are very evil. The gig was at Harjun nuorisotalo, a former mortuary, where we had actually recorded some music about 10 years ago. There were a bunch of very cool bands of the bill, so it was nice to have a chance to play there. We play first and played the usual classics while doing the usual faces. We resurrected the Anti-Flag anthem "Die For Your Government" and were supposed to punk out "Do You Wanna Dance" as the final song but we ran out of time.

Notes:
Blanket's backbone has been our luxurious practice space at Kyläsaari ("Village Island") since the beginning of the band. While other bands often practise in crammed spaces with limited hours, we have always had all the space and time we could possibly need. The location is also excellent, not far from the city center and very accessible with public transportation. Which is why the announcement that the building will be torn down beginning of May 2010 came as no big surprise.
We had organized a few nice happenings at the practice space earlier (in 1999 and 2000), inviting fellow bands to play and hang around back in the early days. It was clear that this special place would need a special funeral.
Kyläsaarirok 5 coincided with May Day's eve, a classic Finnish drinking festival. We thought of bringing in bands and people who have some connection with the place. We were happy to invite Lovegrapes, the mighty Clarkkent and the legendary Vantaa-based punk band Bussikaista reformed for a reunion gig about 10 years since their last show. We also played a short set with Blanket's initial lineup, of which bass player Sami sadly couldn't make it, so we replaced him with longtime friend Janne Ruuttunen. Fittingly, improv-punkers Lika kaivo closed the night with another batch of fresh material and fucked up noise.
All in all, it was a truly memorable night and thanks to everyone who showed up! As for Blanket, the future is very much unwritten. The loss of their home base leaves the band in a whole new situation and uncharted waters. Thanks for all the years! Peace and love.

Notes: A Wednesday gig and our first time at Liberté, a good cosy place for smalltime bands like us. A really nice line-up, Fudge Flounders played their second ever gig, but were really good, and should probably change their name in all honesty. You should check them out if you have the chance. Lucy Was Driving keeps on improving and entertaining, hope their upcoming album is received well. We played well despite lack of practice due to all kinds of sickness. "My Two Hands" was played on request from girls. Thanks to everyone who came to support! And oh yeah, "Software Developer" featured the Fibonacci number sequence in the middle part; somewhat embarrassing, but true.

Notes: Our 9th time at Semifinal and it seems that most of them have been with the mighty Clarkkent. So it was just like the good old days with CK who still keep on improving and impressing time after time. The first band of the bill Rainbowcrash weren't local (from Kuopio Rok City to be exact) and it's a tough spot to play first in a foreign city. Ville and Teppo have had the idea of a playing a small "fenno-hawaiian" acoustic set some time, as Ville has been playing the ukulele for a few years and Teppo had been learning to play the accordion after he found one from his relative's summer place. So before the first band Rainbowcrash Ville played Eddie Vedder's Soon Forget on his own and Teppo joined on the three other songs hoping that people would come in early and check out the whole line-up. Blanket played second and introduced two new tunes "Brucewayne" and "Ponta Delgada", the first new tunes since ages ago. Software Developer featured pieces from all kinds of songs thrown in the middle section. A party atmosphere all thru the night and another nice Semifinal gig.

Notes: A fun Wednesday gig after a long break. We played pretty much our standard tunes; even played two encores cause we were the last band of the night and who knows if/when we'll get to play again. We brought back P-Girl from the 90's (!) and threw in some snippets of "Feel the Good Hit of Summer" by QOTSA into "Software Developer". Thanks to everyone who showed up and supported in full.

Notes: SavePoint is our favorite game store ever. Whilst selling console and PC games, they put together a double compilation LP of local heavy metal bands (Blanket is officially heavy metal) and also organized some club dates at Night Life to suit. We played our usual tunes with fellow locals Trinity. Mad props to Savepoint for staying active and supporting the local music scene!

Notes: Our second ever outdoor gig at the "Value Life" festival in downtown Helsinki. We have apparently made too many anti-religion songs and have pissed off God, since it pretty much poured thru our set. The other bands seem to be in better terms with the man upstairs as the weather cleared up nicely after we were done. No electrocutions though and some people did check out our set under umbrellas. Valvomo was truly awesome in the ensuing sunshine!

Notes: The release party for our debut album "This is the New Wave of Political Rock" which had been released a day earlier. Clark Kent played before us and to our surprise CK closed out their set by covering "Good King". What an honor, the first time one of our songs has been played as a cover. We mostly played the songs off the album, "Bags Under My Eyes" had never been played live before. We brought an older standard, "Waterbed" for the encore. For the last song of the set, we invited Jaakko and Pikkis to join us for "Independence", a song that celebrates the do-it-yourself attitude, a very fitting way to close out the great evening. Thanks to everyone who showed up to support!

Notes: Another hot night in Semifinal and our seventh time in this wonderful little room. Almost exactly a year since the last one. Simo was away and while we called Pikkis from Clark Kent who was arranging the gig to tell him that we can't make it, he volunteered to play bass for the night. We didn't get much practice done, but Pikkis did his homework and did a great job on bass! Big thanks to Pikkis for organizing and playing on half of the bands on the bill. No surprises in the set, we're still recording the album and didn't want to play the newer songs which will appear on the album live just yet.

Notes: We were invited to play in Turku at a really nice place called Klubi and though we were in the middle of recordings, it was good to get one gig and a little trip in as well. A cool excuse to take a ride in Simo's new car as it has this great sky window thing. It was a normally quiet Wednesday night in the summer paradise which is Turku and the other bands were really cool and the organizers had put in a lot of old-school effort to promote the night. We played first and a basic 30 min set with a lot of the same songs as in the Semifinal gig from 2005 just because it had gone so well. :) Thanks to the organizers and to the Koskinen sisters for continuing support!

Notes: A surprise gig in middle of the recording sessions. We originally were supposed to play this gig in fall 2005, but Ville got sick and we had to cancel. So we re-scheduled our semi-acoustic set and brought along some extra forces as Willi was still on maternity leave. Willi was substituted by our producer Jaakko who is among other talents also an excellent drummer and he knew most of the songs already. Our good friend Janne is also a multi-instrumentalist and he brought some new depth into the set with his keyboards. The set went ok, we had to start a bit late after the Finland vs. Russia Olympic hockey match. We got some quality grooves going with a newly arranged and slower "Independence" and "Rolemodels" was fine acoustic as well. We'll see if some of this even finds its way to the recordings...

She Has Nothing (Blanket Human Jukebox Vote Winner)
Notes: "Greetings in the name of His Majesty, the Emperor Haile Selassie!"(*) started off a hot and humid Semifinal evening. We played second in a tight four band bill and started off with songs from the "7" promo. We featured one new song "Action" and one pretty new one called "Eyes Wide Shut", which had been played only once earlier. We hadn't played live for almost a year so we gave our absolute all and must have sweated a ton in the sauna-like conditions on stage. We organized a small Blanket Human Jukebox competition before the show where people could vote for any song they would want to hear us play. One lucky voter, Kimmo "Air" Kyttälä, won a free entry and a backstage pass to Semifinal. We closed our set with the old classic "She Has Nothing" which got the most votes in a tight race. For the first time we played more than the allocated 30 minutes at Semifinal and were prepared to play "My Echo" to close the set, but ran out of time. Huge thanks go out to Pikkis for arranging, a super soundguy and especially everyone who came and withstood the heat and sweat and supported thruout the evening! You rule!

Notes: The most surreal gig probably ever. "Stop huumeille ry" arranged an outdoor event at the annual city festival "Taiteiden yö" in Helsinki. The event was held right next to the main railroad tracks with an elevated concreate slab functioning as a stage. The lineup under the yellow makeshift roof was very cool; Janne from Mummypowder started out with a voice and an acoustic and Maria Gasolina followed with a great party set along with a fire performance. To underline the artsy feel of the night we were equipped with head-lights and white overalls while the overcast night turned into torrential rain as we hit the stage with our "Roswell" look. Played an usual rockin' set and brought in "Testimonial" after a long delay. Thanks to a super sound guy we even didn't get elecrocuted in the downpour. Thanks to everyone who showed up and supported despite the horrid conditions; a friend said that "it rained cause we were on fire", thanks Siwa. :)

Notes: "Blanket Plays New Songs" was the theme for another Factory evening in front of friends. We hadn't played live for a while and wanted test out the new tunes we had been working on. Five new songs of which two were recorded a month earlier were played with varying success. To make things even more compelling, we filled the rest of the set with songs we hadn't played for a while with the exception of the closer "Oslo". Thanks for all the feedback.

Notes: Another year, another funky-ass Kyläsaarirok. Line-dancing all thru the night again at Ravintolalaiva Wäiski with a little fewer people in attendance but superior bands and great vibe. Among all the stressful organizing, the stage-building and weight-lifting, we managed to play an quite solid set with the usual Blanket standards, we went for the full city trilogy of Ivalo, Milano and Oslo, but not in full succession yet. Threw in an quite unreheased encore to induce maximum booty-shakin' at the end; it had worked well before and it worked well again. Thanks to all the people who paid for tickets without a wimper and showed up to support great bands and create a really nice vibe. Biggest thanks to Sir Jani Autero, who kindly lent his u-haul trailer, which made the tough KSR logistics a breeze. Hope to see you at future shows and at the next Village Island Booty-Shaker!

Notes: A fun gig at a very short notice. The Letsmakesomenoise.com webzine is arranging some Wednesday night rock clubs at the local Stella Star Club and we were booked for another week, but had to cancel due to Simo's traveling schedule. They had some problems with cancellations for an earlier week and contacted us on Monday if we were able to play on Wednesday. The boy scouts we are, we were glad to help out and join the great line-up and started out the evening with a standard rocking set. The evening was totally dominated by the hugely excellent Kometa, one of the most promising and exciting bands out of Helsinki right now. Hope someone still remembered us as we were blown off stage by those crazy bastards.

We were slow to warm up and had some technical trouble in the beginning, but got the party going with some punk numbers and being the last act, we were able to come back for two encores. Thanks to Pin Ion and Kronik for organizing, Mr. Marko Kairema for quick guitar servicing and most of all to all the people who stayed and danced and supported thruout the night. Notes: A nice gig at the 11th annual Louhela Jam free outdoor hang-out festival with thankfully no rain this time around. A different setting it being our first time outdoors and with the permission to play a longer set (45 minutes) than usual. We tried to insert a few lighter songs to middle of the set just to notice we didn't have any. :) The eternal sunshine and the woodstocky atmosphere on the grassy noels of Louhela inspired us to finally try out "our ska song" Brixton out live for the first time ever, nothing bad with happy songs in the summer, right? All in all, a fun gig; a good start to the summer where we will be taking it easy as everyone should. Peace!

Notes: A nice club with nice sound and a nice bill in a nice town, but the club was virtually empty with only a handful of people in the audience. The night was organized by Vasemmistonuoret (the Left Youth of Finland) as the evening carried a strong Fuck NATO -message which we were more than happy to endorse. Kids remember: smiles good, guns bad. Played first and friends had to hurry to catch a glimpse of our rocking set. Played a dark new song still called "Ivalo" and closed out the set with our favorite cover from Anti-Flag. A very good bill; Kari Peitsamo ruled way beyond expectations and Velcra showed why they might be the next big thing.

You Got to Die for The Government [Anti-Flag]
Notes: After a year off, the infamous rok festival Kyläsaarirok returned at a new venue. Banned from arranging in our practice space, we looked long and found Restaurant Ship Wäiski to be a excellent place our little home-made festival. The night also functioned as the record release party our improved record label's, Independent Fruit Company's, first major release, the compilation album "Volume 1". All the four bands featured on the CD performed that night in what turned out to be a very successful evening. Bringing in some special flavor among the headliners were the young act "the Brown Stripes" who played a short but well-received set and the evening was closed by the punkers "Likakaivo" with their 8-song 4-minute burst. The people found their way to the shores of Hakaniemi and were able to duplicate the special vibe of previous Kyläsaarirok's. We could have played sharper, all the arranging took a toll on our performance, but still it was a night to remember and we hope to do it all over again next year! "Testimonial" made a return to the set list as a request from Lauri. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who showed up and supported the cause. Also, the evening was recorded by Jaakko from Clark Kent and we hope to have some live mp3's up from the gig later on...

Notes: A fun gig after a little break. Playing loud in front of good friends at this somewhat surprise gig; the nice guys from Tajuvana invited us to play this cozy little club on quite short notice. The Fanatic song was played for the first time live I presume and Oslo was played on a request from a friend.

Notes: Our second time at Gravitaatio, a large student party in Otaniemi, Espoo. The technology students weren't into our punk so much, but it was fun nevertheless. It's always great to introduce a new song as this time we premiered the rocker "Petroskoi" (nameshouldchange) and all in all, the newer stuff worked well.

We had one new song "Travelaway" on the setlist and we included a lot of stuff in there at the spot. One of the best gigs we've ever played. Thanks a lot to everyone.

Notes: Back in our new second hometown Jyväskylä, our first time at a great rock club called Bar 68. Our set, which was unfortunetaly marred early on by some little technical trouble, was slightly longer than usual at around 45 min. We were glad to introduce two new songs, Istanbul and Reservoir (well, to be exact, Reservoir is a really old song [played Feb 16 99] but it's totally reworked and has a new chorus and other stuff nowadays). And "the Rat song" - "Rotta" was played live for the first time as well. We hoped for a little bigger crowd and we could have played better, but all in all, it was a nice night at a nice place.

Notes: We played the usual 25 minutes to a handful people who dared to show up at the Pukinmäki youth center. Our set featured a new-comer; a really great punk song, Anti-Flag's You Got to Die for The Government. The night before, our good friend Jussi Hyttinen married his longtime girlfriend Satu Lekola, and we played that song at their wedding. We wish the best of luck to those two crazy kids. Thanks go to the nice people at the youth center, who worked hard in putting the night together.

Notes: Our second time at the Vernissa center in Tikkurila, Vantaa, this time with the promising Tonearm and the very solid rockers Valerian. Yet again we were treated well with good sound and a sauna afterwards. Luxurious. Thanks. For the last song of the set, the "old classic" She Has Nothing, we invited our old friend Jussi to come in and provide a little backup singing. Dressed in the trademark pink dress, OJ provided us with some quality screaming showing good stage presence and anger throughout. You can (and should) listen to a live recording of this show at our good LIVE traks page. The Videos Page has a video clip of the set closer "She Has Nothing". And there are photos of this gig here.

Notes: Blanket's first-ever show at the number one rock club in Finland, Tavastia! Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the main act, the circus act/rock band Reprinted, we got the opportunity to warm up the evening with a 25 min set in front of a fairly good audience. We played a no-risk set, which was received well and we hopefully made some new friends during the night. A little snippet of The Duplo!'s "Summer of 99" was played as an intro to "Milano" as a tribute to the Downtown 65 Rajatorppa -theme of the evening. All in all, a milestone of sorts for the band and we hope to play there again in the future. Thanks to everybody who showed up and especially the supernice guys in Reprinted for their support.

Notes: One of Vantaa City's biggest music festivals is the annual Louhela Jam, which this year consisted of three club nights and one outdoor show. We were invited to play in the final club night at a restaurant called Energy Club in the city of Louhela; many wonderful songs have been written about this cute little suburb. We played around 30 minutes in front of a good crowd, people smiling and dancing thru the set, very cool. The set featured one new song - about a week old effort called Milano (namemightchangeasusual). Big thanks to everyone who travelled and watched the show and to Eba Mäkynen & crew who battled fatigue all weekend long in arranging (and playing in) a supercool festival. Thankyou kindly.

Notes: Whoa. Our man, Tuukka, entered us in the Network Band Competition without us knowing about it, and we were extremely pleased to get picked among the 6 rockin' bands from some 85 demos to play in the competition. This meant a first Blanket gig outside of the Helsinki metropolitan area! On the first night, we played our set with the usual antics in front of good friends, new and old. To our amazement we somehow managed to win the competition and we were awarded a spot to warm up the sonically and visually pleasing Kemopetrol the next night in the huge Hippos Halli in front of a whole bunch of (more or less drunken) students. Nervewracking and supercool, we did our best in a venue a little bigger than what we are used to. Anyways, a supernice piece of recognition for the band - all the hard work has taken us forward i guess... Among the other prizes was 3 days of free studio time in Jyväskylä which we will be putting to good use later on in the spring. Ending a little winter drought in playing live, we introduced two new rockin' songs: Testimonial and Kill the Kids. Huge thanks to everybody involved; Tuukka & co, Siwa Suhonen, Marko, Joni, Ukri, Leikas and especially Riku Niemelä, who busted his ass during the weekend to have things rolling along smoothly. Molto grazie.

Notes: Our first time at the wonderful Vernissa Center in Vantaa. A super-nice place to play, good sound, nice people and to top it all: a big dressing room with showers and a sauna! And towels provided! We could get used to this kind of luxury. :) One of the three bands scheduled for the evening cancelled (or didn't cancel, they just didn't show up) so we had a little more time at hand than was expected - and so, we stretched our set a bit with one Bob Marley tune (can't go wrong with Prophet Bob?), "Molly's Lips" (originally by The Vaselines, but I've only heard the Nirvana version) and put in "P-Girl" for the rokin' encore. Thanks to everyone who showed up, we had a good time.

Notes: The second coming of the world-famous rok festival Kyläsaarirok - Village Island Rok. This year with even more performers and even more beer! It was a very special evening, a huge thanks to everyone involved - see the news page for the total listing. :) Somewhere in the middle of all the organizing hassle Blanket played the usual 25 min with the usual antics. The odd "My Generation Has Nothing" combination was played to prove wrong the point made by Soundi's demo reviewer (read the review for "promo2") that we had somehow borrowed a thing or two from the Who classic. (all lies) A little intro was also played with a couple of lines from the "Ladies and Gentlemen Part I" by The Presidents of the United States of America and "Fuk Nato" was played as an encore by request from our friend MMiettinen. You can listen to most of this show at our Live Tracks page.

Notes: A nice little 30 minute show in front a few loyal supporters; the night carried an "Against Violence" theme and Blanket was promised a show in February in Gloria in the finale show of the "Violencia No Resulta Nada" campaign. Good. The set - being a more relaxed one - featured two rockin' new songs (song titles might still change ;)) to start off the set, other curiosities included a short version of Bob Marley's "War" played while Willi was doing some adjustments to his drum set in the middle of the set. One has to respect the wonderful job the people at Walkers are doing in trying to get the kids on the street to get their acts together.

Along with the spacy Hagmen and ever-improving and magnificent Ulmala, we had a good night with good friends in the audience. Introducing a new pop song - Akvarium (namemightchange)- to the public and getting some good feedback from good people. Notes: This year Blanket entered the legendary Ääni & Vimma band competition for young un-signed rok bands around Finland, and it turned out as a very up-lifting experience for the band and its new line-up; we were proud to introduce the saviours: Mr. Willi Messmer, drums and Mr. Simo Särkkä on bass. We received some very good feedback from the judges during the competition and ended up finishing second overall! Really nice. Lots of great bands like Come Inside, Surf Sonics and Sara have risen to national recognition from this competition, so we are very honored to have done well. A huge bunch of thanks goes out to the organizers of the events and all of our friends who showed up to give us a cheer.

Notes: Homebaked always tastes the best, eh? The "do-it-yourself"-mindset we learned from reading numerous Ian McKaye (from Fugazi) interviews, we realized that we can and should do stuff by ourselves and not sit at home waiting for somebody else's help. (shouldn't that be clear from the start?) From that view spawned our own club night, Kyläsaarirok! - Village Island Rok City Festival! We had three great young bands on the bill, lots of friends hanging out and taking it easy, and the evening worked out better than we could've hoped for. Again thanks to everybody involved!
As mentioned in the News section, this was the last gig for Blanket with Sami and Antti on the line-up. They're sadly leaving the band for other life stuff after lacking commitment and energy for some time. We wish them the best of luck in the future and still hope to keep the Blanket flame burning with new musicians.
The show itself was a bit overcast by a farewell mood and also the stress on arranging such a night. Hope that we still have something to give was given a boost as we were happy to reveal two rockin' new songs, 7Fish and Independence. All in all, it was a really great night. A perfect example how things should be done. Thank you.
(oh yeah, if you care, Squirt the Daisies was re-named to the eye-catching, FUCK NATO. It might be nice that for once a song's title tells what the song is about in a no-bullshit sort-of-way.)

We played three brand new songs (Waterbed, Blindfold and S.T.D), cause u see if you plan to play new songs live, you are forced to really finish them up and that's always good. Notes: Two gigs in a week! Somebody stop us. Played for 35 min in front of a somewhat puzzled student audience. Our loyal friends Reino, Uganda, VP and Yussi saved our asses (and confused the fuck out of the up-tight students) again by doing this hugely fierce slamdance routine in front of the stage for the entire set! It was amazing, we love you guys. Hats off to the legendary Voimaorja who played on the same stage later on the evening and made the building shake with 100 times the audience we could assemble. And they we're nice guys too. "Don't underestimate the power of rock 'n roll."

[A real shame that they're closing Fat Mama since it's one of the only good places for young bands to go out and test their stuff.] Blanket played an about 60min set with (significantly) less covers this time around, the only one being Sinatra's (well, he made it his song) My Way closing out the set. Other bands on the bill that night were TAOS and Epidemic with Blanket playing first. The oldie version of I.S. featured Mr. Octavio "When-I'm-Naked-I'm-All-Tattooed" Salazar from Venezuela on stage bringing in some street-credibility.
